Will LIma locos run on code 75 track?
A strange visitor at Dury's Gap. There was some discussion about whether the wheels fitted to Lima European stock would cope with Peco code 75 track. The quickest way to answer this was to run this 1980s vintage NSB EL-13 over the Gap's mix of Peco code 75 and bullhead. The result was a faint click in places but it didn't slow or slop and more importantly whizzed through all the pointwork without so much as a judder. It positively purred along... well as much a Lima stuff ever purred.

My Lima Warship and 73 used to negotiate Scaleway bullhead...just!
ReplyDeleteContemporary (late 70s) Hornby was fine as was Aifix, Mainline etc.
I suppose if you really, really wanted to run Lima on finer track it would be worth seeing if any of the Ultrascale conversion wheelsets sold for the Lima 73, 33, 47 etc. would be suitable.
More recently I wondered whether the Triang stuff would run over modern Peco Setrack, answer yes although the 6-coupled locos don't like the combination of second radius curves and check rails on the diverging roads of the points. Think I've still got some code 75 somewhere so will have to give it a try with the Dock Authority Shunter.
In the case of LIMA, it is relatively easy to reduce the flang depth by a fraction, this releives any frog problems. Tri Ang is another matter. If the wheels are smooth steel ones they can easily be turned back and down (The flanges are not only deep but thick too). If the wheels are the older knurled ones they can be re ground to a better profile, the knurled wheels are sintered and do not take kindly to turning (I still have the bits from when I last tried!).
