Now I can see it(!), what a brilliant film...a huge amount of period detail and some useful insight. After I saw you and Karen yesterday I popped into the little bookshop half way up School Hill and found a book called Seventies Spotting Days Around the Southern Region, full of photos mostly five to ten years after this film was shot. Again, a lot of variety across the region at the time. I guess the Grand Plan in the film has pretty much come to pass now with most freight being block trains although there's still a lot of variety in infrastructure traffic. Just seen 69001/2 go past on test (see video on Facebook) as well as half an hour later a 73 so the modern scene still has some interest... Horse tramway? No idea, though isn't it lovely, especially the mouth of the tunnel/adit and the inverted cast bridge. I've got some 7mm coal drams similar to those, hmmm... I found the freight train at 18:05 interesting...several odd vehicles like an ex-GWR Toad and others, perhaps on their way for scrap? I wonder whether the sequence with the two horses shunting a train could be Horncastle? Reminds me of stills I've seen of the station. All good stuff, much food for thought... Stig.
I think the Python crew must have watched Professor Jack Symonds in action to perfect their beautiful diction. And those poor horses! Boy did they have to work hard, and on uneven ballast.
